The third round of the racing season saw the World Championship arriving in Italy, more precisely in Sardinia at the track of Riola Sardo also known as the “sandy hell” because of the type of ground which makes this circuit one of the most demanding and challenging tracks of the entire World Championship. This round welcomed the young riders of the 125cc, who faced what was for them the first round of the season. The MXGP team welcomed Brian Bogers, who joined them taking his experience and many skills with him.

Thrilling start for the 125cc riders. Noel Zanocz, who previously won the Italian International Championship race hosted in Riola, set the fourth best time in his group while Simone Mancini was tenth. Douwe Van Mechgelen was in the other group and qualified eighth.
Zanocz took the lead of the race at the start of the first moto and tried to keep up with the solid race pace to open a gap on rivals. With four laps to go he had to take a step back because of his wrist which is not completely healed, and qualified with an excellent second place. Very solid start also for Douwe Van Mechgelen, who pulled away and moved to eight place and was also the author of a phenomenal race which he ended up in fourth. Mancini experienced an unlucky moto as he crashed together with other riders in the first corner and had to work his way up, eventually finishing 16th.
Zanocz went for a quiet start in the second moto, but lap after lap he started to open up the gas and overtook rivals till getting to first place. Noel was very good and fast and thanks to a flawless race crossed the finish line with a good margin over rivals. Another solid performance allowed Douwe Van Mechgelen to qualify seventh. A technical problem forced Simone Mancini to leave the race.
Noel Zanocz triumphed at the first round of the European Championship and came home with the red plate. Douwe Van Mechgelen was fifth overall.
Noel Zanocz:” “I picked up a small wrist injury last week while training but I still came here with a good feeling. In time practice I made a few mistakes which didn’t allow me to get a good gate pick. I still managed to get a good start in the first moto around 5th place. In the first lap I took over the lead and was leading almost all the race, finishing second in the end. In the second moto the start was not as good, I was just outside the top 10 in the first lap but I worked my way up to the first place – and I finished there. I still can’t believe this happened and I struggle to find the right words but it’s a brilliant feeling. I even felt like crying on the podium but I didn’t work [he smiles], I can’t even say how happy I am right now. Now we are looking forward to Arco and we will try to keep going like this.”

Terzo appuntamento stagionale e il Mondiale Motocross fa tappa in Italia e precisamente in Sardegna a Riola Sardo sulla pista definita “l’inferno di sabbia” per il suo caratteristico fondo che la rende una dei tracciati più difficili ed impegnativi di tutto il mondiale. In questa tappa fanno il loro esordio i giovanissimi della 125 alla loro prima gara della stagione,

I ragazzi della 125 partono subito fortissimo con Noel Zanocz, già vincitore su questa pista negli Internazionali d’Italia, fa segnare il quarto tempo nel suo gruppo con Simone Mancini decimo, Douwe Van Mechgelen invece è ottavo nell’altro gruppo.
Al via della prima manche Zanocz è bravissimo a portarsi subito al comando delle operazioni, Noel ha provato a tenere subito un ritmo molto veloce per prendere un vantaggio considerevole sugli avversari ma a quattro giri del termine causa anche un polso non proprio al 100% ha dovuto lasciare strada e ha chiuso con un ottimo secondo posto. Buona partenza per Douwe Van Mechgelen che si è portato subito in ottava posizione e grazie ad una grande gara ha concluso al quarto posto. Sfortunato Mancini che è stato coinvolto in una caduta di gruppo alla prima curva ed è stato costretto a rimontare dall’ultima posizione chiudendo 16°
Nella seconda manche partenza accorta per Zanocz ma dopo i primi giri ha incominciato a spingere e a passare i suoi avversari fino a raggiungere la vetta della classifica, Noel è stato molto bravo e veloce e non ha commesso errori e ha potuto transitare sotto la bandiera a scacchi con vantaggio sugli avversari. Douwe Van Mechgelen con un’altra buona prestazione ha concluso settimo. Simone Mancini purtroppo a causa di un problema tecnico è stato costretto al ritiro.
Noel Zanocz vince la prima tappa del Campionato Europeo e si porta a casa la tabella di ledear, Douwe Van Mechgelen è quinto assoluto.
Noel Zanocz:” “Ho subito un piccolo infortunio al polso la scorsa settimana mentre mi allenavo, ma sono comunque arrivato qui con un buon feeling. Nelle prove cronometrate ho commesso alcuni errori che non mi hanno permesso di ottenere una buona scelta del cancello. Sono comunque riuscito a fare una buona partenza nella prima manche intorno al 5° posto. Nel primo giro ho preso il comando e sono stato in testa per quasi tutta la gara, finendo secondo alla fine. Nella seconda manche la partenza non è stata altrettanto buona, ero appena fuori dalla top 10 nel primo giro ma sono riuscito a risalire fino al primo posto e ho finito lì. Ancora non riesco a credere che sia successo e fatico a trovare le parole giuste ma è una sensazione brillante. Mi è venuta voglia di piangere anche sul podio ma mi sono trattenuto [sorride], non posso nemmeno dire quanto sono felice in questo momento. Ora aspettiamo Arco e cercheremo di continuare così”.
