Sardinia hosted the first of two home races for the Fantic team and this season’s new entry, Francesco Bellei. Although the Trentino talent grew up on much harder terrain – in fact, Arco di Trento will be his real home GP in a week – he also stood out in the sandy hell of Riola Sardo. His comeback in race 1 was simply spectacular.
Caught up in a crash at the first corner, Bellei showed all his determination and excellent athletic preparation. The 16-year-old Fantic rider climbed from the back of the pack, setting top-3 times, and crossed the finish line in sixth place. His teammate Douwe Van Mechgelen, fresh from a podium at the Dutch Masters, started in the middle of the group. After a more cautious first lap, he pushed hard to bring his Fantic XX 125 to ninth place.
In race 2, Bellei got off to a better start, immediately entering the top 10. On a very demanding track he maintained a good pace, finishing in fifth position. The sixth place overall in this third round of the season allowed him to climb to third place in the championship standings, just one point from second place. Sunday was more complicated for Van Mechgelen. After falling at the second corner, he managed to recover up to 15th place, finishing twelfth overall.
Francesco Bellei:
“All in all it was a positive weekend in the sand of Riola. Race 1 was compromised by the start: I was involved in the crash at the first corner, but I made a great comeback. Without that incident, I could have fought for third place. In the end I finished sixth and I am very happy with how I rode. In race 2 I started quite well, I recovered a few positions and was fourth, but unfortunately on the last lap I had to give up a position. Considering that it was a race in Riola, it didn’t go badly at all – and now Arco di Trento awaits us, we’ll try again at my home!”
Douwe Van Mechgelen:
“I expected more here in Riola, but the level is very high, with so many fast riders capable of winning. If you don’t start strong straight away, it becomes difficult to recover. The crash at the start of race 2 complicated things and I wasn’t able to ride at my best. But I know that all the hard work will pay off sooner or later – we will continue to push.”
Campionato Europeo IN SARDEGNA
La Sardegna ha ospitato la prima di due gare di casa per la squadra Fantic e la new entry per questa stagione, Francesco Bellei. Benché il talento trentino sia cresciuto su terreni molto più duri – infatti sarà Arco di Trento tra una settimana il suo vero GP di casa – si è messo in evidenza anche nell’inferno di sabbia di Riola Sardo. La sua rimonta in gara 1 è stata semplicemente spettacolare.
Rimasto coinvolto in una caduta alla prima curva, Bellei ha dimostrato tutta la sua determinazione e un’ottima preparazione atletica. Il sedicenne pilota Fantic è risalito dal fondo del gruppo segnando tempi da top 3, fino a tagliare il traguardo in sesta posizione. Il suo compagno di squadra Douwe Van Mechgelen, reduce da un podio al Dutch Masters, è partito a metà gruppo. Dopo i primi giri più cauti, ha spinto forte per portare la sua Fantic XX 125 al nono posto.
In gara 2, Bellei è partito meglio, inserendosi fin da subito nella top 10. Su un tracciato molto impegnativo ha mantenuto un buon ritmo, chiudendo in quinta posizione. Il sesto posto assoluto in questo terzo round stagionale gli ha permesso di salire al terzo posto nella classifica di campionato, a solo un punto dal secondo posto. Domenica più complicata invece per Van Mechgelen. Caduto alla seconda curva, è riuscito a recuperare fino al 15esimo posto, classificandosi dodicesimo assoluto.
Francesco Bellei:
“Tutto sommato è stato un weekend positivo nella sabbia di Riola. Gara 1 è stata compromessa dalla partenza: sono stato coinvolto nella caduta alla prima curva, ma ho fatto una grande rimonta. Senza quell’incidente, avrei potuto giocarmi la terza posizione. Alla fine ho chiuso sesto e sono molto contento di come ho guidato. In gara 2 sono partito abbastanza bene, ho recuperato qualche posizione e mi trovavo quarto, ma purtroppo all’ultimo giro ho dovuto cedere una posizione. Considerando sempre che si correva a Riola, non è andata affatto male – e ora ci aspetta Arco di Trento, ci riproviamo a casa mia!”
Douwe Van Mechgelen:
“Mi aspettavo di più qui a Riola, ma il livello è altissimo, con tanti piloti veloci in grado di vincere. Se non parti subito forte, diventa difficile recuperare. La caduta al via di gara 2 ha complicato le cose e non sono riuscito a guidare al meglio. Ma so che tutto il duro lavoro prima o poi darà i suoi frutti – continueremo a spingere.”
